#Abstract
The map on which the parochial churches existing in 1320-21 are represented shows that there is a disparity between the North of Portugal, where small rural parishes are dominant, and the Central and Southern regions, where great urban parishes embrace not only the town but the surrounding villages as well. This contrast can be explained when we relate the forms of territorial occupation and social organization that followed the Reconquista.
