A recepção de Salústio na Antiguidade tardia e na Idade Média
Arnaldo do Espírito Santo
AbstractThis study focuses on the reception of the works of Sallust, aimed at demonstrating the following: (i) both Bellum Jugurthinum and De Conjuratione Catilinae were among a highly restricted number of texts used in education, not only during the Late Antiquity/ Early Middle Ages, but also in crucial moments of cultural and literary renaissance in Europe; (ii) the process of indirect reception, through lectures by Church Fathers and grammarians and compilations of sententiae and proverbs, promoted the direct reading of Sallust’s works and was crucial to the endurance of his humanism; (iii) a significant part of Sallust’s thought on the causes of conspiracy and social instability was incorporated into teaching manuals destined for the education of princes, thus exerting great influence upon medieval political theorization.
