António de Araújo de Azevedo - Conde da Barca : personalidade exemplar de coragem e dignidade
Eurico de Ataíde Malafaia
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractAntónio de Araújo de Azevedo, Count of Barca as of 17th December 1815, was a noble figure in Portuguese society, exercising diplomatic and, subsequently, political power from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. He earned his greatest renown, however, in his success as Envoy Extraordinaire and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of The Hague and, temporarily, on two occasions, as negotiator for peace talks between France and Portugal. In the same capacity, exercising the “full powers” assigned to him, he accomplished his goal by signing the famous Peace Treaty of 10th August 1797. However, by imposition from England, this Treaty never came to be ratified by the Prince Regent, D. João. This paper comprises a documented account of the event which led to quite serious consequences, including the striking episode of the imprisonment of the diplomat himself.
