#Abstract
Following the times of expansion and assertion, the Order of Citeaux (the Cistercians) fell into profound decline. In addition to the internal conditions of the Order, the environment of crisis in the 14th century aggravated its decadence over the following centuries. In the case of Portugal, the visitations provide us with living testimonies not only of the different facets of the crisis, but also of the zeal for reformation which some Cistercians were experiencing by the first half of the 16th century.
