#Abstract
Quotations from the Bible are often found in medieval works. What led those authors to use the Sacra Pagina so admirably and naturally, such that biblical passages can be found not only in the descriptions of the lives of Saints, of miracles and pilgrimages, in the chronicles of the Crusades, but also in legal texts, like the Livro Preto of the Cathedral of Coimbra? Did the medieval notaries use the Sacred Scriptures indiscriminately, or did they, on the contrary, reveal their preferences for certain books from the Bible? Was the recourse to the Auctoritas synonymous of their users’ superior culture? This paper is an attempt to answer these questions.
