Arquitectura, medida e número na igreja cisterciense de São João de Tarouca
Virgolino Ferreira Jorge
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractThe building of the Cistercian Abbey of Tarouca began in 1152 and the church was consecrated in 1169. In 1834 the abbey was secularized. The interior of the building still reflects the formal and semantic expression of the monastic mentality of the first Cistercians in Portugal. Much research and abundant records of the measurements made in the church enable us to confirm the use of an apparently simple reticle as the methodological principle for its architectural composition. The unit of linear measurement adopted was the old king’s foot (“pied du roi”). The central module is 8 king’s feet sideways in length. We were able to confirm that the plan of this temple in Tarouca complies with the proportions typically found in the Cistercian churches of the Bernardin type.
