AbstractThis reading of Faulkner’s classic Civil War novel addresses issues of gender construction and gender subversion in the socially disruptive context of military conflict. Focusing on Drusilla Hawk’s character, and drawing on women’s history of the period, I intend to investigate the war in the novel as a space chosen to test out the young characters’ gender (in-) conformity, as well as the extent and significance of her ability to challenge social and religious convention. Drusilla not only volunteers but practically forces her way into the army, which seems to suggest that to her the war is as much a place for social destruction as for individual construction. I am interested in Faulkner’s unlikely choice of a woman-soldier who recklessly rides and shoots through the rather exclusively male battlefields of this war, and will be investigating the reasons for that option (although as a real-life military fraud Faulkner makes no secret of his fascination with the performative nature and creative possibilities of gender).
