Sistemas, recursos e serviços de informação : transformação de paradigmas e modelos de gestão
Maria Inês Cordeiro
Documento (.PDF)
AbstractThis paper explores some major issues that information services face nowadays, especially the case of libraries, derived from the accelerated blurring of concepts and technical “spaces” where documentation, information and technology come together. Such a blur reveals an increasing intersection of fields, competencies, functions and factors that were previously more distinct or at least more independent. This translates into discontinuities of the models upon which systems, and information resources and services, are managed. Yet, the discontinuities may not be evident as the practical familiarisation with information technologies is irrefutably positive and already embedded in all activities. However, familiarization per se is not enough to operate levels of transformation that are more than superficial and deemed durable, i.e. not confined to the surface of the practical technological solutions or to the conditions of their transience. The pluridisciplinarity in library and information management is an aspect that for long has been taken as “natural” in the field. But it may not attain the minimum levels of coherence and common understanding if it continues to develop by simple “accumulation” or “juxtaposition” of competencies that cover an ever growing range of areas, without any conceptual level of synthesis and integration. Analysing the experience of libraries with information technologies, this paper points out the need for research towards such a synthesis, as a fundamental strategy to enhance the real interdisciplinarity needed to support future models for the management of information systems and services.
