#Abstract
Both in research and in practice, Information Science specialists have long been developing approaches to the characterization, description, organization and use of documents. Technological evolution in the past few decades brought about two cycles of deep change in this area. The first has come with the generalized availability of powerful tools for storing and manipulating documents, the second is associated with the rapid growth of network communications and the Web. The most significant change is the opening of the world of document production and use to the non-specialists. In this context it has been quickly noticed that the main constraint on document access came from the absence of the models and organization, typical of traditional collections. A new vision on documents, centered on their meaning, is currently emerging in the community of Web technologies. The core developments in this area come from the W3C Consortium and its "Semantic Web" initiative. The goal of the proposals in this area is to make information on the Web "machine understandable". The success of the initiatives towards the Semantic Web depends on the commitment of experts from Information Science, who can contribute with their knowledge and experience from case studies, while obtaining the tools to experiment new solutions required by the dynamic Web environment and cooperating in setting the standards for the information to be shared.
