AbstractThe Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation organized in the following year of its creation the I Exposição de Artes Plásticas. This event, according to its catalogue, aimed at offering a perspective of the plastic arts’ situation in Portugal so as to put forward some problems affecting this area. Portuguese artists responded massively to the Foundation’s invitation and submitted their pieces in the categories of painting, sculpture, drawing and print. Subsequently, a jury selected the works that were to be displayed in the Gulbenkian’s exhibition. However, this process wasn’t pacific, since the artists that were rejected by the jury protested against the selection made, pointing out to a clear distinction between «modern artists» and «academic/ conservative artists». Nevertheless, the Exposição de Artes Plásticas did integrate both «schools», constituting, thus, a heterogeneous and contradictory panorama of Portuguese art. In fact, the major prizes were given to renowned artists, with a long artistic career. The acquisition of works of art by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation proved to be another significant consequence of the Exposição de Artes Plásticas, since these pieces originated a modern art collection that was, afterwards, integrated in Gulbenkian’s Centro de Arte Moderna. We can relate this exhibition to the international context as well, given the dynamics of that time concerning the revitalization and the birth of biennials. Gulbenkian’s exhibition, which was from the beginning planned as a periodic event, introduced an extraordinary investment in the organization of exhibitions and in awarding prizes to Portuguese artists. This exhibition soon became a reference to the future displays organized in Portugal.
