AbstractThere are two large groups of buildings that meet the museum institutions. The historic buildings that were built following another architectural program and later adapted to meet the needs of museums, reaffirming the symbolic meaning attached to the past and the tradition of nationalities. We also have buildings designed and built specifically to meet the growing demand for new museums and that are symbolically associated with an image of renewal and globalization, with plastically bold architecture. We have also the combination of these two architectural lines, combining historic buildings, usually designed to house the exhibitions and annexed structures built accordingly to current technical requirements, directed to attend the services, administration, technical reserves, and other functions that intend to renew old institutions. In any of the architectural components aimed at museum functions, the technical requirements are becoming more specific, establishing a specific branch of architecture, the architecture of museums. Among the various needs and constraints that the architecture of museums should attend, the climate has a strong influence on the "functioning" of the museum, mainly on the conservation of the collection and for the feeling of comfort of the users. Any building is in the middle of the relationships between external environment and the created internal micro-climate. The historic buildings that house museums provide a kind of "filter" between the exterior and the interior, from the perspective of the constructive characteristics of the historical period in which the protected buildings were erected. On the other hand, new museum buildings have great freedom to create, and can meet the contemporary demands and use the technical possibilities and the present knowledge on the climate. This article discusses some tools that the architecture of museums can use to deal with climatic influence in order to attend the needs of museums.
