#Abstract
The main goal of the research that was made for the dissertation in Museology Mestrado about “O Salgado de Alcochete – Percursos de Sal: Perspectivas de Musealização” was the study of the possibility of making a museum out of the existing salt-producing outlets as a way to value, preserve and unveil their importance as a place of memories and identity. To achieve that, it was needed a preliminary investigation to establish what was its importance in the social, economic and cultural development of this region. In the first part, we make an approach of the history of the salt production and trade in Portugal and in the Lisbon area to establish the context the Alcochete’s salt. The second part is about the way the salt was produced, the process and the techniques used, and also the social and cultural aspects connected with it. This work tries to point out the worth, both in the material and cultural ways, and the urgent need to implement a museum program that can recover and preserve the memories of the Alcochete community, that is changing very quickly both in the economic and social ways due to the construction of the Vasco da Gama Bridge, built in 1998, that connects directly to Lisbon, now only 15 minutes away.
