#Abstract
This study analyzes three possible reasons for the small number of tourists visiting the Alberto Sampaio Museum in the city of Guimarães; namely, a profile of tourists uninterested in choosing the museum as a place to visit; secondly some tourists’ unawareness of the museum’s existence; and thirdly, the museum’s inadequate approach to both publicizing the institution and providing necessary services for its visitors. This study also identifies solutions to these problems and ways of reversing the present trend. Similarly, this study shows a museum need to treating tourists differently from the rest of its visitors because the specific behaviour of those who have assumed a tourist mentality, that I called “staying tourist”, influences the cultural choices that they make.
