AbstractThe financial support needed to fulfill the educational functions of museums can be achieved by means of encouraging and consolidating the relationships with their visitors. Museums should engage in marketing strategies converted in graphic design tools that would increase visibility, improving the supply of products and services and their quality. The importance of these practices is defended here, by the demonstration of the performance of graphic design at the construction of the visual identity of museums. Although the examples that are a reference in the promotion and communication, from the set of museums in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, there is still a long way to go, as was observed in a survey applied to 90 institutions in the capital and its suburbs.
