AbstractIn the context of new projects on the politics of interculturality, the Museum of the history of immigration to Catalonia (MhiC) has created spaces for itself to consolidate in a unique manner, on one hand as a museological project and on the other by means of a project of intercultural dialogue. In 2003, MhiC opened its doors with the objective of creating open spaces of reflexion about the dynamic nature of citizenship and our society in continual construction. Departing from a socially themed collection, the museum experiments with diverse strategies with audiences typically not welcomed by museums with the objective of acheiving intimate practices with these publics rooted in memories of migration either personal or familiar. This presentation analyzes the efforts of MhiC to generate a symbiatic model with its audience(s). These attempts at feedback manifests are manifested in the gathering of immigrant testimonies and objects for the collection, and the museum also aligns itself with other institutions and creates educational programming on a micro level. The example chosen to highlight and observe is an artistic collaboration between MhiC, students of a local secondary school, and students from a welcoming center for recently arrived migrants. The intention of this gathering was to establish a subjective cartography that would help to express how the phenomenon of migration marks our experience. Students took over a gallery in the museum to convert it into a giant map, upon which they chose to trace a route in an imaginary archipelago of elements one faces during times of cultural diversification (i.e. social life, language, future plans). Color-coded strings representing each participant crossed and diverged until they each converged on a territory which represents a common goal: the island of well being. In this constructive experience and artifact, subjectivities connected to create a polyphony of narratives that generated a new central object for our museum.
