AbstractThis essay outlines some results obtained from a survey on accessibility in museums (Cohen, 2008) and links to several activities developed by the Research, Teaching and Design thinking group named ‘Nucleo Pro-acesso/ PROARQ’ Our goal is to assess the conditions of access to museums for disabled people (PMDs); we have chosen to work with heritage buildings, according to the list produced by the National Historic and Artistic Patrimonial Institute (IPHAN) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As well as analyzing this aspect, we are also working on the development of concepts and design perspectives for museal sensitive atmospheres (related to senses, perception and mobility). The atmospheres experienced by PMDs and the routes followed by them so as to reach the arts scene is a matter for us – and leads to a different kind of reflection. The diversity of situations in which those people are faced with has brought us to a conjoint of sensations and perceptions that makes museal atmospheres an efficient mobilizer for both extreme situations of fear and pleasure. Our methodological steps in this survey consist of: interviewing visitors with or without some kind of deficiency, following an ethnographic model; providing guided routes; producing roughs and sketches of the place; photographing; shooting; and scanning the route. As for one of our goals, we are producing a descriptive text for the sensitive routes, including sensations and traces of the memorial experience gained with the museal route as well as including the reports made by interviewed people on how they would like the path to be. At last, as already said, this paper shows some results found with the developing survey and aims at tracing a future panorama of capable strategies for easing the inclusion of people with deficiency in museal atmospheres and enhancing their identity with the cultural world.
