AbstractThe city as patrimony is a complex net of relationships where the constructed element is only one of the elements and not necessary the most important. The space concept and the comprehension of its elements: form, use, meaning, and memory could be useful and necessary instruments so that the city became its reason: a place for people changes their experiences and meets each others. In Nova Iguaçu, Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, the Bairro-Escola (Neighborhood-school) Program intend to create a synergy between constructed patrimony, education, and community participation so as to guarantee the preservation of the material and immaterial city, The Program has its focus on the most important collective buildings and in the public space that connect them. It acts in the preservation of the physic patrimony, in education and community activities that preserve the local memory having always in concern that the school (like an educational and cultural net) and the community are the core of this process. Making possible a permanent and systematic work centered in the cultural patrimony like a primary fountain of knowledge, registering the collective memory and innovating in the preservation of the cultural patrimony, having the critical conscious appropriation like one of the fundamental ways in a sustainable preservation process and empowering the citizens identity.
