#Abstract
The monastery of St. Salvador of Paço de Sousa began its establishment in the late tenth century in the area between Sousa and Tâmega rivers. In 1200 it already had a relatively cohesive amount of properties in Penafiel, Paredes and Castelo de Paiva, as well as some other possessions, more or less concentrated, in more distant regions. Its importance is reflected in the support received from the local nobility and in the role that this ecclesiastic institution played in the population settlement and the territorial organization. In this article I present the project of my masters’ investigation whose main goal is the reconstitution of this monastic domain, as well as the identification of the actors and the interpretation of the mechanisms responsible for its organization and growth.
