Giulia Rossi Vairo
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractIn 1318, the King Dinis decided to go on pilgrimage to Compostela, to gather in prayer on the tomb of the Apostle saint James. In front of the curious silence of Chronicles and the unquestioned indifference of Portuguese historiography in relation to this episode, we intend to rebuild, through the available sources, the chronology and modalities of the jornada of the King to Compostela. In particular, we will study the motivations and reasons for this expression of the devotion of the monarch in order to assess its symbolic meaning and to contextualize this act within the complex dynamics of power during those years. For this, will be examined some initiatives and actions taken by D. Dinis along that same year within the political, social, religious, cultural and artistic field, together with those relating to the personal sphere of the sovereign, interpreted as direct consequences of the King's pilgrimage to Compostela.
