#Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the social, political and economic mechanisms, that have influenced and conditioned the urban landscape of Porto in the late Middle Ages. We consider both the physical space of the city, and the attitudes, conditions and decisions defended in the construction of urban space by the city’s main social groups (municipal and religious elites). For this analysis we rely on the information contained in the “Atas of Vereações” and the “Books of Scrolls” from the Municipal Historical Archive of Porto, and in the documents from the Office of the Chapter of the Cathedral of the city. Contrary to most existing studies on the medieval urban landscape of Porto, which, by focusing on specific areas of the city and not in her whole, show a compartmentalized and limited vision in its scope, this study seeks to analyze the various interests that are simultaneously confronted in the medieval Porto, thus trying to understand its urban growth as a result of these tensions. Our goal is to construct a new vision of the medieval city, moving the focus from its physical description to the mechanisms that shaped it.
