A Liturgia dos Defuntos na Arte Funerária Medieval
Marta Miriam Ramos Dias
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractAdding Purgatory to the medieval imaginary of Beyond led to a greater concern with the afterlife’s fear and to a change of attitudes towards death. Believers tried to ensure a minimum time of passage through Purgatory in their testaments, establishing the forms of intercession for the soul. The lack of sources for the theme being studied must be overcome trough alternative means and for that is made an analysis of the liturgy of the dead and pseudo-liturgy practices. The concern with the tomb was quiet obvious, shown in the representations found on the arks presenting scenes intimately related with liturgy. Special importance was given to the iconographic program of Christ Pantocrátor surrounded by the apostles and to characters to whom was assigned taking care of the departed’s soul.
