AbstractThe History Museum of Jalapa is unique in Eastern Guatemala. It was founded in 2006 by a professionals group outside of the State patronage. Appointed as a cultural institution for the Jalapa community, its work has spread mainly to school groups that interact in a house-museum from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, helping to preserve the few monuments still existing in the Department of Jalapa: the Temple of Minerva and the Chipilapa Bridge, both from the early twentieth century. This has led to struggles between the Municipality, the University, the Museum and the media. The experience of rescueing and preserving a house that was closed for forty years, allowed them to reveal a treasure unknown to the villagers. Through this rescue and exhibition, the local community has gained an identity and a certain love for the tangible and intangible heritage of the jalapanecos. According to the visitors’ opinions, the local view on the history of Jalapa has utterly changed, recognizing the importance of knowing their own history through objects from the past. They consider the museum as an institution of their own, that allows them to learn, recreate and develop awareness of a common past and of a future in which all are interested. Key words: Museum.
