AbstractWhat is there in our museums and what is still missing for the citizens with disabilities to feel that it is worth visiting them and even coming back? Some national and foreign researchers have discussed these and other issues, analyzing what has already been done on the subject and what could be done in the future. This is the case of the research carried out by Cohen (2008) and by the Pro-Access Nucleus of the UFRJ, together with institutions responsible for museums overwhelmed by the Brazilian Heritage which we introduce in this article. Our research has proved that museums are neverending sources of information through all our senses. Sometimes, perception may be dominated by only one of them. A blind person moves around using the walking stick as a flare and also the sounds or the smells. There are museal environments shaped by these sensory, corporal and emotional spaces and by the images of those museums that exist inside each of us. It’s a question of comprehension of these sensitive surroundings that welcome our body and our senses, these places where we find home and shelter. There are already works that show this new dimension of museums and universal exhibitions available for those who cannot see or hear. Bodies with disabilities moving around, hearing, seeing and touching constitutes an enriching experience, not only at the theoretical level, but also at the practical one. It means to have access, to walk, to see, to hear, to touch, to smell, to feel, to perceive or to describe -in endless different ways- how human nature is. A research on the inclusion of people with deficiencies, and their sensorial and emotional experiences concerning museums accessibility -the way we define it nowadays- is highly significant. Rather than being an approach to satisfy everybody, it is an attempt to understand human universality, capable to explain the feelings of these people as the result of the museal practices of our planners. This article assesses the accessibility of the IPHAN museums located in the State of Río de Janeiro. The obtained results are indeed satisfying and illustrative about the field research carried out with these people. We expect that in the near future we will be able to expand the paradigms when planning the sensitive environments -physical, sensory and emotional- of our Fluminenses and Brazilian museums.
