Documento (.pdf)
AbstractGlobalization is often seen as hegemonic, however, the complex localglobal dialectics has been creating social phenomena that cannot be only analysed from a global or a local perspective. As icons of an urban cultural identity, the Contemporary Art Galleries become interesting symbolic standing points of the cities glocal features - local globalisms or global localisms Icons of an urban cultural identity, contemporary art galleries have become strong symbols of the city's glocal features- localized globalism or globalized localism (Sousa Santos, 2002). Within the scope of this thesis, we carried out a social, political and economic analysis of the context in which these two European contemporary art galleries emerge. For this analysis, we use two case-studies: the transformation of an Art Nouveau private villa into the Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves, in the city of Oporto, and the renewal of the Soviet Palace of Exhibitions, into the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnus. We tried to incorporate common global tendencies, in addition to local particularities in the construction of these localized globalisms. Key words: Glocalization, Contemporary Art, European Cultural Institutions.
