Documento (.pdf)
AbstractWithin the framework of the reflections of the Second Research Seminar for Museology in Portuguese and Spanish Languages, I am presenting this paper on Museum and Leisure to discuss the responsibility of the museum and its engagement with social changes: core topic I, sub-topic 1.2, The social function of museums in the ethical development of the community. This document shares some ideas of the doctoral thesis Two great museums of the XXI century. Integration of urban regeneration and access to culture: the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, analyzing the coexistence of economic development policies and the social-cultural management of museums of contemporary art in order to draw conclusions and assessments relevant to possible transfer of this model to other geographical contexts. The paper deals with leisure and democracy because the latent question is: what kind of visitors’ experience do museums promote that debate centrality and community development? The observation of anachronisms in the model of cultural democratization applied from the seventies in the museum praxis gives rise to this reflection. The optimism and idealism of those decades gave a positive role to culture and since then, museums are trying to convey their message to more people. Traditional museum policies that centered on the object gave way to policies focused on the public. professionals began to discuss the accessibility of works of art and the relationship of society on the basis of the replacement of elements of the traditional museum -building, collection, public- by a new paradigm of heritage: museum: territory + heritage+ community. This presentation exactly addresses this issue: the way in which museums interact with their public, becoming leisure spaces, lively and dynamic, with inherent political interests, coherent and functional to the needs and desires of the visitor and the territory that gives them life. The new cultural praxis converts museums into an entertaining experience. The challenge of the current cultural policy focuses on the incorporation of the museum into the leisure circuit -new audiences, new environments, and new techniques- which in turn define new contents and new processes. Key words: Museum. Leisure. Community. Economic development
