#Abstract
This work deals with the Museum of the Favela (MUF), founded in 2008 in the communities of Pavão, Pavãozinho and Cantagalo, located in the Southern area of the city of Río de Janeiro. The MUF is born from the union of a group of villagers motivated by the desire to change their reality in response to the identification of the favelas solely in areas of segregation, poverty and violence. Their main goals are to turn he “morro” into a “carioca” touristic monument about the history of the creation of the “favelas” and to present its culture and its memories, in order to facilitate the visitors the knowledge that, in general, is not presented through the means of communication. This group of villagers was supported by the Program of Growth Acceleration (PGA), a set of public policies designed with the purpose of accelerating the economic growth of Brazil. In the city of Río de Janeiro, the PGA´s were carried out in the favelas. In the specific case analized in this article, the main action of social and urban insertion of the PGA is a museum (the MUF) sponsored by the Institute of Historical and Artistic National Heritage (IPHAM) and later, by the recently created Brazilian Institute of Museums (IBRAM). The objective of this study is to present a bit of history and the performance of a group of villagers who participated at the foundation of the Museum, intending to change the spoilt image of the favela as a contribution to the museum and with the support of public policies of social inclusion.
