Documento (.pdf)
AbstractThe objective of this communication is to retell the experience of the project called Connections of Knowledge in its interface with the Community Museum of Lomba do Pinheiro, in Porto Alegre, South of Brazil. The origin of this project is an initiative of the Observatory of the Favelas, together with the Ministry of Education, which aims at the quality of the students of a popular origin in public universities. Since 2005, the Federal University of Río Grande do Sul takes part in the project, which includes approximately one hundred scholarship holders per year. The Connections of Knowledge is an assertive action project whose main goal is to foster the knowledge exchange between the communities and the teachers. In 2009, eight students of the University participated in an experience which carried out its activities within the scope of the Connections of Knowledge project in the Community Museum of Lomba do Pinheiro. The students, together with a field coordinator and the coordination of the Museum conceived, planned and developed four classrooms open to students of the schools within the teaching network of the neighborhood. Thereafter, they dealt with topics such as memory, history, image, heritage, reading and writing, puppet shows and environmental education. In the classrooms, the children could perform exchanges with the teachers, thus enhancing the value of their local culture and reflecting upon the problems they face. This experience invites us to reflect upon the responsibility of the museum regarding social changes. In this particular case, it enabled the mediation between university students of a popular origin and communities from the outskirts of a large city, therefore contributing to a deeper reflection upon a local reality and to the valorization of memories and heritage of the social group involved. Key words: Community museum. Memory. Heritage. Affirmative actions.
