Novas propostas e desafios das mediações culturais em museus virtuais

AbstractIn today's society, the access to cultural products such as works of art has been much more extended through reproductions than through originals. This can be easily seen in the uninterrupted expansion of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) primarily on the Internet. These technologies enable new forms of production, circulation and reception of symbolic products in the cultural scene, making it more complex by adding multiple layers of information to the products presented. Museums take advantage of these technologies to expand more and more each day, broadening their geographic reach as well as the scope of their own reputation. There is a growing number of Websites that define themselves as virtual museums and create new exhibition spaces and contexts for art production requiring different types of knowledge to appropriate the artistic information presented. On the one hand, mediation processes depend more and more on the new interpretations by the public Thus, and in order to achieve a proper appropriation of the information transmitted, these museums are being established as spaces for challenge or instruments for transformation of that which is represented. On the other hand, Internet offers great opportunities to satisfy these needs, provided that the hypertext is its hallmark. Before, the duty to provide assistance to the public of museums to understand works of art and exhibitions belonged to other subjects, usually with academic qualifications; today in the virtual environment, it is the user who performs this task, processing the information that makes up this cultural mediation. The latter is understood as a confrontation and exchange between subjects through the medium. In the case of the virtual environment, these exchanges are conducted through simulated relationships, even when they are not at all direct. Finally, the new technologies offer unprecedented and promissory opportunities for mediation within the virtual museums. Key words: Museum. Virtual museum. Cultural mediation. Information science.
