Registros do Caminho Novo para as minas de ouro nos mapas antigos

AbstractIn the passage of seventeenth century to the eighteenth there was the implementation of a new access way to the region of the gold mines, recently discovered in desertões of the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, within the territory of Portuguese America. Identified as New Way or New Way of Rio de Janeiro to the mines, its construction had become essential and was intended to reduce the travel length of time until the region through a direct connection to the city Rio de Janeiro, without the previously required trip to São Paulo. With this new way replacing the so-called Old Way or Old Way of São Paulo, there was a significant reduction of travel duration. Garcia Rodrigues Pais, son of Fernão Dias, has opened this more direct way of communication between the mine and the city of Rio de Janeiro, by agreement with the Crown, signed on 22 October 1698. With construction starting from the mines, more precisely near Barbacena, on which found the course of the Old Way, it took four years for completion. Only since 1717, and because of a growing movement and the need for control over the movement of goods and people down that road as well as the collection of taxes, began the construction of checkpoints or registers (registros) at strategic points that way, particularly at the borders of the region of mines with other captaincies. Called registros e contagens, these checkpoints partly remained active until the end of the colonial period. After 1822, with the independence and the creation of the Empire of Brazil, these old checkpoints were eliminated and some were instituted by others who came to be identified as coletorias and recebedorias. From this set remains as testimony only the Registry of Paraibuna.
