AbstractThe use of historical cartographic documents in various research is proving increasingly essential, and with the assistance of new digital technologies, these documents are preserved and increasingly available to the public. The document investigated in this research was the Koeler plane, which consisted of an urban planning which served as a Petrópois city development guidance. The plane is marked by the Petrópolis plan (1846), which became known as Koeler Plant, in honor of his executor. The plant, scale 1: 5.000, contains different cartographic elements such as hydrography, roads, public parks and the land spots, blocks and land reserved for public and religious buildings. This paper aims to digitally reproduce this plan, since its restoration and therefore use is quite difficult due to their current conditions. The methodology employs photographic survey techniques, using a high resolution digital camera and a rail system and varying vertical scene capture. In order to make the mosaicking of 191 photographs taken were carried out a series of tests using multiple algorithms for georeferencing in order to verify which one would have a better set of photos and preservation of features for the digital plan generation. The process was conducted in five pairs of photographs distributed by the area of the plan, and was used ArcGis 10.1 software with defferent transformations: Zero Order Polynomial, 1st Order Polynomial (Affine), 2nd Order Polynomial, 3rd Order Polynomial, Adjust, Projective Transformation and Spline. After georeferencing of these pairs, a test was made on the basis of distortions produced in area and length, and it was found that the transformation 1st Order Polynomial (Affine) was the one that showed lower distortion values of the photographs, which secured a highest quality photo mosaicking.
