#Abstract
Born in 1962 with the creation, by Adérito Sedas Nunes, of the Gabinete de Investigações Sociais (today, Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa), Portuguese sociology is almost 50 years old. In this text, these almost 50 years of sociological research in Portugal are taken as an object of sociological research and empirically interpreted. The text is divided in three parts. The ?rst, without repeating the reconstitutions of the historic trajectory of the discipline made by others, brings new information and underlines fundamental aspects of the advanced institutionalisation of sociology in Portugal. In the second, the domains of research that have been explored by Portuguese sociologists are identi?ed in detail, voids and declines are pointed out and the questions of the divisions that emerged in some of those domains with other social sciences are analysed. In the third part the dominant generators of sociological research are described and compared: the socio-cultural generator and the political-social generator. We end by presenting an inventory of some controversies over the trajectory, the situation and the capacities of Portuguese sociology.
