#Abstract
D. Francisco Manuel de Melo, a cosmopolitan who cultivated many fields of interest, was captivated by the study of history at a young age, but it was only late in life that he was acknowledged as an historian. Caught up by the historical events, together with his personal interests and the trends of his time, he became especially absorbed by the study of contemporary history and the history of previous decades. The fidelity of his narratives is based on his own experience in the battlefields on land and at sea during the turbulent 17th century, although he also used other historical accounts. Although D. Francisco followed the common object of historiography, his work reveals a clear predisposition for social history and openness to new cultural trends, going as far as to apply mathematical concepts of reality in the development of historical knowledge.
