#Abstract
The study analyses the 1905 version of the work Fidalgo Aprendiz that may or may not have been used for the play’s productions after 1940, the year when the National Theatre was renamed D. Maria II replacing the name of Almeida Garrett, given following the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic. The study also analyses more recent productions of Francisco Manuel de Melo’s play: in 1985 by the «Seiva Trupe» Theatre Company, in 1987 by the «Século» Theatre, in 1998 by the «Comuna» Theatre, in 2002 by the Theatre of Portalegre, in 2004 by the «Memória» Theatre Group, and in 2005 by the «Teatro Animação» of Setúbal, most of which toured the country.
