Documento (.pdf)
AbstractWithout exhausting the list of dramatic works based on Cervantes’ novel, this study aim is to study the theme of Don Quixote found in Portuguese drama, from the first work dated from 1709 and entitled Entremez, to our days. The diverse works show different readings of Cervantes’ work, in a first stage its comical aspect, the invitation to dream and hope during Romanticism, the political perspective found in some works from the second half of the 20th century, and more recently, its partial remaking. This paper proposes an analysis of some of the approaches and divergences from the original text, the diverse criteria used in the composition of the figure of Quixote, the more or less close relationship between Quixote and Sancho, and the different conclusions for the story. The original texts were naturally the source used for the analysis of the first works. The more recent plays were, whenever possible, confronted with the actual performances, considering the personal views of the authors as spectators of some of the performances.
