#Abstract
In spite the traditional neglect and even disregard that guided literary historians concerning books of chivalry, this paper aims to describe the references to this literary genre, object of our study for many years, and once the most popular genre in Europe. Our study of the references is followed by an exhaustive list of the histories of literature consulted, from 1816 to the most recent published in 2004, and two appendixes listing the books of chivalry written by Portuguese authors as well as those printed in Portugal (whether from Castilian or Portuguese origin).
