#Abstract
This text presents a brief study of the artistic heritage of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Póvoa de Varzim. This study (as well as the exhibition at the Municipal Museum) is an integral part of the commemorations of the 250 years of the foundation of this Brotherhood in 1756. It was extremely important as an institution of social solidarity, without ever neglecting its purposes as an association of layman united by faith and Christian values, whose programme of intervention covered the 14 Works of Mercy, both the corporal and the spiritual. As this institution was founded upon and succeeded the ancient Mother Church of Póvoa, it became responsible for preserving a great part of its artistic religious heritage. In fact, the pieces pertaining to (or which pertained to) the Santa Casa reflect over seven centuries of the city’s history and art, from the primitive chapel dedicated to St. Tiago to its current installations.
