A construção do Convento de S. Gonçalo de Amarante
Lúcia Maria Ribeiro Carvalho
File (.pdf)
AbstractThe quest for answers to the agonies and torments of the people served as a great impetus to the worship of local Saints throughout the 16th century. St. Gonçalo of Amarante is included in this group of local Saints and his worship drew crowds of people. This was why the Dominicans wanted to build the Convent in his honour. This Convent was founded in 1540 by João III and its construction was not complete until the reign of Philip I of Portugal. The passage of this long period of time is clearly reflected in the final result, which is not consistent or uniform in style. The traits of the different masters who took part in its architecture are distinctive and clear. This work focuses on this Convent and those responsible for its construction.
