#Abstract
The meaning of the term Charity as a Christian doctrine and in the biblical sense. The emergence of the first fraternities as social practices of human solidarity from the Middle Ages onward. The foundation of the Misericórdia de Lisboa (Holy Congregation of Lisbon). Christian charitable institutions in Amarante as from the 16th century: documents on the Misericórdia de Amarante (Holy Congregation of Amarante), dating from 1529. Analysis of the conduct, characterization and number of constituent members and heritage of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Amarante.
