#Abstract
This paper draws partially from a research into the educational roles of public libraries in Portugal, concluded in 2001. After an extensive literature review, the paper discusses diverse conceptions of literacy and information literacy, and goes on to introduce and discuss several models of information literacy, and organizations and projects concerning information literacy. The role of libraries in promoting information literacy is analysed, and the paper suggests that they are key players in the process because they have a variety of information resources, information management systems, and specialized staff. Some barriers to the fulfilment of libraries roles in promoting information literacy are also identified: the scarcity of resources, lack of tradition and theory, and limited conceptions of library’s roles among professionals and in society.
