#Abstract
Standards in museum documentation and Collection Management Systems (CMS) have been in the last seven years our main area of investigation and expertise. Portugal has no tradition developing data structure standards to document objects or collections, so our principal aim in this paper, as well as in our thesis, is to propose some fundamental aspects that museums and documentation specialists should be aware when choosing our creating a CMS. Another objective of the current research is to generate an important and urgent discussion on the inclusion of documentation as a relevant part of the museums accreditation scheme carried out by Instituto de Museus e Conservação (IMC).
