#Abstract
During the Estado Novo, the Portuguese dictatorship time, many, museums of etnography were founded. With the Exhibition of Portuguese World (1940) and the so called “Plano dos Centenários, developed from 1937 the idea of creating regional museums in the main cities emerged by Luís Chaves in order to keep the local historical memories. With the same purpose smaller rural museums were created during the 40’s in “Casas do Povo”, which were established throughout the country. These institutions were close to the population. Meanwhile the Museum of Popular Art was founded in Lisbon with its routes in the great Exhibition of 1940.
