#Abstract
A bourgeois activity, collecting is a recent cultural practice in the Portuguese society. Considering the collectors inserted in Ilustração Moderna, published between 1926 and 1932, the article chases the sense and the practice of private collecting in Oporto during the Military Dictatorship. Portuguese romantic and naturalist art collectors, ideologically conservatives and mostly bourgeois, these men aim order, trying to impose values in which they believe among an instable society like the one between the First Republic and the New State. To achieve their goals, they authorize the divulgation of their art collections in an ideologically engaged magazine.
