Ascensão, decadência e reinvenção de um museu : o Museu de Arte Popular (1948-2010)

File (.pdf)
AbstractThe great cultural promotion of António Ferro, leader of SPN/SNI, focused on popular culture, supported by the policy of the spirit as vehicle of affirmation of a regime and a paradigm of its action. Within this context, popular, national and genuine art was given great visibility and a privileged place, as regards the effort of a people that should be understood and dynamic. In this field, António Ferro will reconcile it with the latent modernism and, within the sphere of good taste he will guide it and put it at the service of a campaign which will aim its valorization and preservation, evident in several intiatives undertaken by the Secretariat, that will be reflected in a future museological institution, the Museum of Popular Art (MPA) created in 1948. Object of constant indifference after the 25th of April, the MPA which will undergo a long period of decline and true expositive and architectonic degradation, managed to resist and survive several attempts of shutdown. The reopening of the MPA is, currently, one of the priorities of the cultural policy of the Ministry of Culture. In order to achieve this goal, there is an urgent need to reinvent the MPA. Such a reinvention demands to start in a pertinent and efficatious way from the expositive concept and from its museological characteristics -still present in many aspects- and especially from its beginnings, so as to achieve the desired success. This new life, of MPA will have to strongly commit itself in the long run, otherwise, it will not be possible to perceive permanencies and mutations, causes and effects, interesting a society which, curious about its origins, wishes to conceive possible scenarios for its future. Thus, the MPA is introduced with the challenge of an innovation, not a rupture: to adapt its essential parts to the contemporary needs. Key words: Antonio Ferro. Museum Folk Art. Museology
