AbstractThe relationship of museum buildings with the environment has, as principal axes, the study and creation of micro-climates favorable or unfavorable to the development of museum activities in its internal space, as well as the analysis of the interferences that the operation of the museum building brings to the environment in which it is inserted. The article deals, on one hand, with the museum needs in terms of environmental control and comfort for its users and its collection. On the other hand, it addresses the need to mitigate the effects of the operation of museums on the quality of the external environment concerning garbage and water and energy consumption. These areas of knowledge, inside and outside the museum building, are shaped by the architecture that organizes and differentiates the space using the climatic elements and its relationships as axis of its creative process. Designing and building taking into account the climate, is not new. Throughout the development of environment-friendly architecture, favorable and unfavorable microclimate in has always been an element that determined the organization of spatial shapes. At present, this approach also includes the commitment to conservation and preservation of the environment in which the architecture is inserted. The challenge that the 21st century museum architecture shall face is to set out the variables -internal and external, human and object- according to the museum’s typology. These issues often affect the spatial organization of museums installed in historic buildings. Not only do they value areas that are for the public, as exhibition halls, auditoriums, shops or staff, but most of all, the infrastructure, even in new constructions, provoking changes in the operating logic of museums and forcing institutions to rethink the features that the physical structure should offer to their cultural structure, with the environment as a central element.
