La Nueva crítica institucional?
Isabel María García Fernández
File (.pdf)
AbstractSince their insertion in the citizen’s life museums have become spaces of encounters which have not always been provocative. From the beginning of the 20th century the art museum has stood in the front sight, becoming an essential element in the artistic debates, due to its ways of functioning and malfunctioning. The museum, as a legitimization space, provoked misunderstandings among contemporary artists, museum professionals and the public. Probably one of the most interesting moments concerning the above is the institutional critique, born in the 60s and today considered by many an anachronism. The museum then became a challenging space which led to different reactions, all of them unable to start any institutional change. In the 21st century, as Andrea Fraser stated “now, when we need it most, institutional critique is dead, a victim of its success or failure, swallowed up by the institution it stood against”. This is part true but not totally exact; it seems that either the aesthetic autonomy or the criticism have died; obviously they have changed taking into account questions such as representation, cultural specificity and identity. Also some authors have pointed out a turn from political and economical redistribution to cultural recognition. The institutional critique has come to life again, many young artists are appropriating and reinterpreting questions worked before by conceptual artists (especially by those in the institutional critique circle). A great number of those artists come from Latin America where a public debate has aroused over questions on multiculturalism, prejudices, stereotypes and social conflicts. Many of the artists have created their own museums, artistic proposals which consolidate the need of the institution and suggest new visions and alternatives. Key words: Institutional critique. Contemporary art. Artistic context
