AbstractThe changes produced in the interests of post-modernity between the museums functions and the concept of heritage has had an especial repercussion on museum spaces. The museum, whose mission was the protection, conservation and public display of collections has now become an institution with vocation of meeting place, where heritage objects are exponents of civilization; so to speak, the evidence of the activity of a community in the past, giving to it a value of cultural identity, which as such, serves to illustrate the ideas that the museum tries to convey to its visitors in its new function of social and public service. In recent years the Spanish museums’ landscape has significantly changed, not only on behalf of the large number of museums now extended across the country, but also through the profound social, political and economical transformations that these cultural entities have experienced. Within their historical and geographical context, an interesting development has been produced among these cultural entities -much closer now to the territory and their social community -as it is the museum typology known as local museum. The current proliferation of municipal institutions shows the importance of the social and cultural role of museums in the 21st century, as well as their connecting nature between the local community and its cultural heritage. Our study seeks to highlight one of the experiences carried out by the Spanish Consistory of Murcia: the creation of a museums network for the recovery of the city ‘s heritage. Key words: Cultural policy. Management. Museums. Heritage. Murcia
