AbstractThe present study shows the trajectory of the Museum of Images of the Unconscious (Río de Janeiro, Brazil) in its struggle for the social inclusion of patients in psychiatric institutions labelled as mad. It is worth mentioning the relationship between this trajectory and the texts produced within the scope of ICOFOM LAM. In moments in which the world process of globalization weakens the identity bonds of the most vulnerable communities and social groups, this museum appears as a space of freedom for the discourse of madness and its bearers, aiming at multiplicity and social inclusion. As a precursory movement in the Fight against Mental Hospitals, it is a referent in the field of studies about the human imaginarium and a pioneering area in the use of culture and heritage as tools to transform paradigms and break down stigma. Thus, it becomes an institution working for the citizenship in order to foster the social inclusion of people historically marginalised by society. With a view to achieving a complete social inclusion, it is essential to incorporate new ideas into integrated and integrating actions that allow for the whole process, until knowledge and awareness can guide true citizens. The convergence of art, education and society as a basis for individual and social training, guiding conscience and fostering social inclusion, is materialised in the premises of a museological institution located in a suburb, where its transforming power transcends the scientific milieu into life itself. Key words: Museology. Social inclusion. Art. Madness
