#Abstract
Representation is a quality of the votive objects pertaining to the collection of the Museum of the Aparecida National Shrine. In order to show how these objects are present in the space, an exhibition has been set up in which each artifact -such as a cigarette pack, jewelry and photographs- represent the exvotos, a popular manifestation of faith towards the Virgin Mary. The article offers a theoretical discussion about their representation and interpretation, displayed in a sacred space. Reviewing the bibliography dealing with these issues, we intend to evaluate the discussion on the ex-votos previously selected and analyzed during an on-site visit, interpreting them from their theoretical foundation. Even though the ex-votos preserved in the Aparecida National Shrine are important objects for evangelizing and educating the faithful, their representation transcends the will to demonstrate the fact that someone asked for or received a grace. We must consider that the significance of the objects constitute the basis for the interpretation of collections; providing guidelines for visitors. Such interpretations strengthen faith and relationships between the faithful, the Virgin Mary and the museological space. Besides, they are objects that have the possibility to influence the visitors, giving them the chance to understand that miracles and grace are represented in these objects. While locked in their materiality, the ex-votos are an immaterial way of showing paths to human beings, so they will be capable of recognizing and reaffirming the holiness and healing power that is related to the image of the Aparecida.
