Museos, multiculturalidad e inclusión social

AbstractFor a long time, museums have been regarded as confined spaces in which were held certain exclusive and excluding artistic expressions of mankind. In fact, museums had limited areas where they could hardly shelter some works of artists considered worthy of becoming part of the cultural heritage of mankind. Therefore, they became highly selective spaces in which only were accepted those authors who had previously been selected according to artistic, political or economic criteria. Fortunately, today we experience a new reality in which knowledge has become universal and where everyone has the ability to achieve and express his artistic creativity. Art is no longer for a few privileged people: it became part of everybody’s life, and each person is not only a passive observer, but an active and participative protagonist of its own history. Leaving aside obsolete visions which are already inappropriate for a global multicultural and multifaceted world, the XXI century museums have to gamble for an open-minded, dialogical, interdisciplinary, universal and inclusive mood, as the aims of museums are not the collections per se, but the individuals as agents of their own history and culture, who are called not only to reproducing, but also and above all, to reinterpreting and transforming. Facing a society in which social exclusion occurs as a structural feature, museums have to opt for encouraging the creation of a welfare society based on its inclusive ability, without social, ideological or racial barriers; a society where culture is not imposed…Accepting and encouraging universality supposes an open dialogue between cultures, carried out through a process of constructing meanings and sharing thoughts, as from the conviction that diversity must be respected.Key words: Inclusive museums. Social exclusion. Exclusive and excluding exhibits. Multiculturalism. Intercultural education
