File (.pdf)
AbstractThis article discusses the promotion and preservation strategies of two cultural manifestations of the Brazilian immaterial heritage: the Samba de Roda, which generally makes use of tambourine, guitar, cowbell and birimbau, accompanied by clapping, singing and dancing, and the Congada, syncretic religious festivity, coupled with the cult of “Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos”, where several trios dance and sing using various percussion instruments. The African heritage present in these forms of expression shows how the same population that builds and consumes, continues re-signifying them until the present days; also how they are perceived among their own communities and which of them is more important concerning its attraction for the local cultural tourism. In addition, it discusses the preservation process from the viewpoint of the specific legislation in force for intangible heritage, considering the importance of documentation, categorization and classification in the process of safeguarding cultural asssets. Key words: Intangible Heritage. Samba de Roda. Congada. Preservation.
